Overview
EMD 645 and 710 engines are 45-degree V, two-stroke, uniflow-scavenged diesels: intake air enters through ports in the cylinder liner wall, and exhaust leaves through four poppet valves in the cylinder head. The liner is a wet liner — its outer surface sits in direct contact with coolant — while the head carries the exhaust valves and injector.
How It Works in the Engine
Coolant flows through individual metal jumpers into each liner before reaching the head, carrying combustion heat away and keeping the liner's running surface stable for the piston rings. Because wear on a liner or a head shows up as a compression or cooling problem rather than an obvious break, EMD engines are built so the head, liner, piston, piston carrier, and piston rod come out and go back in together as one power assembly — which is also how we ship these.
