Overview
The EMD 645/710 lubrication system is really three subsystems working together — main lubrication, piston cooling, and scavenging — each with its own gear-type pump, feeding off a wet sump. The main and piston-cooling pumps push oil into the engine; the scavenging pump's whole job is pulling used oil back out before it accumulates.
How It Works in the Engine
The pump gears draw oil from the sump and deliver it under pressure to the main and rod bearings, camshaft, and the jets that cool the underside of the pistons — a duty two-stroke engines rely on more heavily than four-stroke designs, since there's no dedicated intake stroke to help manage piston heat. A pump running under spec doesn't fail all at once; it shows up first as reduced oil pressure at idle or low notch.

- Low oil pressure at idle or low notch positions that recovers somewhat at higher RPM
- Gear wear increasing internal clearance and pump slip
