Overview

Main bearing caps hold the crankshaft's main bearings in the crankcase. On an EMD 645/710, they're torqued in place to the engine's published bolt-torque specification — that clamping load is what keeps the crank centerline fixed while the engine is under combustion loading at every notch.

How It Works in the Engine

Each cap has to hold its bearing perfectly aligned with the ones next to it. If a cap doesn't fit its bore correctly, or the bolt/nut doesn't reach and hold proper torque, the crankshaft centerline shifts slightly under load — and that shows up downstream as bearing wear or oil pressure loss, not as an obviously broken cap.
