Cylinder test valve Manufacturer & Supplier – EMD 645 & 710 Parts
Overview
Every cylinder head on an EMD 645/710 engine carries an indicator (test) valve. It's a small part with two jobs that matter a lot in the field: venting condensation or coolant that has worked its way into the cylinder, and giving a technician a port to take peak-pressure and power-card readings during testing.
How It Works in the Engine
Before starting a cold engine, crews crack these valves open for a slow blowdown so any trapped moisture or corrosive gas vents off instead of getting driven into the combustion chamber on start-up. During running, the same port takes an indicator gauge for compression and power readings on that specific cylinder — which is why a stuck or leaking valve doesn't just cause a drip, it costs you the ability to diagnose that cylinder properly.
Signs You Need a Replacement
- Valve won't seat cleanly, showing up as a compression or power reading that doesn't match the other cylinders
- Stem seized or sluggish from carbon buildup, making the blowdown routine harder to perform
- Visible leakage or weeping past the seat under load
- Thread or seat damage from repeated indicator-gauge use
Why Source This From Apex International
Seat and stem dimensions are checked against EMD/DLW reference numbers before dispatch, so the valve seals correctly and gives a clean reading the first time it's fitted, not after a few blowdown cycles wear it in.
