Overview
EMD 645 and 710 engines run left-bank and right-bank water pump assemblies that push coolant through the cylinder liners, heads, and aftercoolers. Because the engine is a two-stroke design working continuously through every notch position, the cooling circuit has to keep flowing without interruption — a slow or leaking pump shows up as heat problems long before it shows up as a pump failure.
How It Works in the Engine
The pump is driven off the engine's gear train and forces coolant through a manifold into individual jumpers feeding each cylinder liner, then on to the cylinder heads and aftercoolers before returning to the radiators. Impeller design, shaft seal integrity, and bearing support all have to hold together at once — wear in any one of them drops flow before the others fail outright.
Signs You Need a Replacement
- Coolant seepage or weeping at the pump housing or shaft seal
- Coolant showing up in the lube oil (a failed seal lets it cross over — usually forces an oil flush)
- Reduced coolant flow or rising jacket water temperature at higher notch positions
- Bearing noise, roughness, or play felt at the drive shaft
